“I just feel so guilty, Em,” Ava told her, placing her palms on the island bench.

Isabel had gone home to shower and to deal with some work stuff, leaving Ava and Emily to cook dinner and talk. Ava had told Emily how she was so confused about the whole situation with her mum; how she was torn between being sad and being angry; and how that was making it so hard to get through the pain. She explained how she and Isabel had clarified that what they had was, in fact, a relationship, and how her feeling about that relationship was the one thing she was completely sure of.

“What are you feeling guilty about, hun?” Emily asked, putting down the spoon after tasting the sauce she was making.

“It just feels wrong to be happy about one thing when things with my mum are still fresh, y’know?” Ava hung her head, feeling ashamed.

“Don’t do that!” Emily’s voice was stern. “You have nothing to feel guilty about, AJ. Even after everything that happened between you and Ange, you would have dropped everything to be right there by her side if you had known. You would have held her hand through it, and you would have let the past go, but they wouldn’t let you. They were selfish enough to keep you from the truth until it was too late.” Emily’s eyes filled with tears despite her anger. “Now you are left to pick up the pieces and don’t even know where to begin. But I can tell you right now you will not do this alone. I will be right here to help you get through it no matter how long it takes. And not just me. Now you have Isabel, who is a keeper in my book considering she didn’t run away the moment things got tough. I can see she cares for you, and we will both be right here, okay?” She was close to Ava now and placed her hands on her shoulders in order to look directly into her eyes. “And you are allowed to be happy about what’s happening between you and Isabel, and if anyone says otherwise, they will have to deal with the wrath of Emily, the best friend.”

They both broke into a giggle, and Emily reached out to wipe away Ava’s tear before hugging her tight.

“I love you, AJ. Never forget that, okay.” It was more of a statement than a question.

“I love you too.”

“Now tell me. Is Isabel joining us for dinner or is it just you and me for my delicious pasta?” Emily moved back to stir her famous pasta sauce.

“Um, I’m not sure to be honest, and I haven’t picked up my phone since I spoke to Aunt Gloria yesterday.” Ava’s voice dropped at the memory of her conversation with her aunt. How could anyone be so cruel? She got up and went to the couch where, she remembered, she had last seen her phone. Flat. She went back to the kitchen and plugged it into the charger on the bench and waited for it to turn on.
